Cyclones battle to the end in home opener

The Cyclones finally played their home opener Sept. 18, battling to the bitter end. Even while down a couple players to injury, they fought through a 5-4 loss to Waubonsee Community College.

Without two players, the Cyclones had to forfeit sixth singles and third doubles but still kept things interesting. At first singles, Brooke Zielke won 6-1, 6-4. After dominating the first set, her opponent stepped up her game, but Zielke showed character, remaining strong in the second set and surpassing mental barriers. At the second singles spot, Jasmine Abunaim handily won 6-2, 6-3. She played a smart match against a quick opponent. She was mentally present and worked her opponent around the court. The duo also won their first doubles match 6-1, 6-0. They dominated thanks to their clear communication, positive attitudes and killer serves.

Serene Itani, at third singles, lost 1-6, 1-6. The score, however, does not show how hard the match was or how hard she fought against a tough opponent. This match was a character builder.

Audrey Stocklen had a big night at fourth singles, winning her first match of the season (6-3, 6-3). "I could not be more happy and proud of her! She has been working really hard in practice, and it's so nice to see it pay off," said head Coach Breanna Vollan. "She battled hard and played smart against a worthy opponent. She upped her game to secure the win."

Mary Stocklen fought hard, had patience and moved her opponent around at fifth singles but ultimately lost 1-6, 4-6. After a tough first set, she came back, got in her opponent's head and battled like there was no tomorrow. Itani and Audrey Stocklen also faltered at second doubles (3-6, 2-6). They fought with their hustle, good communication, long rallies and smart play.

"The match was hard fought. I am so pleased on how everyone did whether they got the win or not," Vollan said. "All of these matches are a build up to the region tournament. With what I saw, I really think Moraine Valley is going to show up and keep our opponents on their toes during regionals. I can't wait to see what the future holds for us and my players."
