Cyclones hold opponents scoreless and score 16

In their two games over the weekend, the Cyclones scored a collective 16 goals and kept opponents scoreless to maintain their 5-0 record.

"At the start of the week we set a goal that we would win all our games, not give up a goal and try some new things out if we felt comfortable. We met and exceeded all of those goals," said head Coach Al Palar.

The winning began Sept. 7 when they took a 13-0 victory over Truman College. Every healthy player got some good minutes in to help prepare for big upcoming conference and region games. Despite soggy and ragged field conditions, the Cyclones were able to play fast and solid soccer. Anna Kois scored a season high four goals. Veronika Stafira and Mairead Ruane each scored two while Abby Tiemersma, Zaida Chacon, Xochiquetzal Torres-Montez, Iris Cruz and Erin Stapleton each added one.

On Sept. 8 the Cyclones faced the non-conference, non-region Trinity Christian College JV, winning the matchup 3-0. A few players were moved around and because the team responded well, those changes will become permanent. Sylvia Kordaczka, Ruane and Tiemersma each scored in this game. Maribel Carmona now has four straight shutouts.

"We have such a deep team this year, and it was nice to be able to rest some players and see some different things. Although we have several key injuries to starters right now, we have had players step into those roles and do a really great job for us," Palar said. "We have a couple crucial games coming up next week so hopefully we can get a little healthier and be as close to 100 percent as possible."
