Cyclones culminate season at national tournament

After posting a nearly identical record to last season, the Cyclones added to their successes and competed at the national tournament to end the season.

The team finished 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference for second place, losing only to Prairie State College. They took third at the NJCAA Region IV tournament, qualifying them for the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship.

Nick Karczynski, Alex Kokoszka, Seth Yaeger and David Souza were the top four players to compete at the Big Dance in Tucson, Arizona, May 13-17, where they finished 26th. Sophomores Karczynski and Kokoszka have been dominating players the last two years, winning most of their singles and doubles matches.

Next season the Cyclones lose Karczynski and Kokoszka, but will have a core group returning including Yeager, Souza, Tim Flynn and Mateusz (Matt) Marusarz. That crew will be relied on to lead to what the coaches hope is another run at nationals.

"This season was definitely successful. We have a nice team and good core for next year. We had a lot of fun and did well," said Head Coach Steve Yates, who completed his second year leading the program. "It's been good having this group, and it'll be hard to replace our top guys. Those players don't grow on trees. We just have to add to our team."
