Cyclones battle into OT loss to Trojans

Competing in their first playoff game since the pandemic started, the Cyclones were eager to play as deep into the season as possible. They pushed this quarterfinal game into overtime but were unable to stop Triton College.

The Cyclones had their work cut out for them in facing the nationally ranked Trojans, but they weren't intimidated. They started the scoring 25 minutes into the first half on a goal from Gustavo Alvarez. Then the defense took over and prevented the Trojans from finding the net until 25 minutes into the second half. The Cyclones had less possession of the ball, giving keeper Andruw Martinez a lot of work to protect the net from the relentless Trojan attacks; and he made some big saves. Ultimately, the game was tied 1-1 and headed into overtime.

Coming into overtime, the Cyclones had renewed energy on the field, nearly scoring twice. However, some smooth passes through the Cyclone defense saw the Trojans blaze one past Martinez after seven minutes for the 2-1 loss.
