Winning redemption

Winning redemption

The Cyclones have a target on their back, and everyone wants a piece. Waubonsee Community College was on that bandwagon last night in their long-awaited rematch from last season's region final. The Cyclones avenged themselves in the 2-1 victory.

When these two teams last met, the Cyclones came up just short in penalty kicks. This time they demonstrated why they're still on top of the conference. From the onset, both teams were physical with little room for error. In nearly the 20th minute, a high corner kick was headed in by freshman Rodrigo Gutierrez for the Cyclones to lead 1-0. Meanwhile, keeper Gustavo Flores was busy knocking down attempts from the Chiefs, making some key saves. Several minutes later, Waubonsee was able to head in one of their own after a scramble in front of the net to tie the game.

Even with threatening weather in the second half, the Cyclones jumped on another opportunity with 17 minutes to go as freshman Vasili Vouris headed in the go-ahead goal. As time was running out, the skies darkened and lightening flashed halting play. Because they had already played 70 minutes, the game was official, and the Cyclones were able to redeem themselves.
