Bats come out to surge past Cavaliers

The Cyclones and Kankakee Community College continued their third playoff game that was suspended May 12 due to weather. Ultimately, the Cyclones won 9-7 in this high-scoring affair.

Between the two teams there were 24 hits. When they halted action, the Cyclones were up 9-5 in the top of the seventh. Moraine Valley held a lead consistently after the third inning.

Although the Cavaliers scored first in the first inning, the Cyclones tied things in the second when Kyel Alexander drew a walk to score a run. A couple big innings in the fourth and sixth helped the Cyclones maintain a bigger lead thanks to the work of Thomas Moran (3-for-5, double, 3 runs, 3 RBIs) and Brenden Butler (3-for-4, double, 2 runs, 3 RBIs). Also contributing offense in this game were Stephen Insley (3-for-6, 2 runs), Gilbert Jaime-Baez (1-for-4, RBI) and William Curtis (1-for-3, double, RBI). The Cavaliers attempted to come back in both the sixth and ninth innings, but the Cyclone pitching held them off.

Richie Kiernicki led the Cyclones to victory on the hill. He lasted five innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out two. Among the relief pitchers (Robert Keating, Timothy Dobrik and Michael Dudek), Brett Smith recorded the final outs for the save.

With this win, the Cyclones move on to sectionals against Madison College in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday, May 17, noon.
