Fall sports season a success during the pandemic, more sports to come

Before the fall 2020 sports season started, there were many unknowns and concerns with how to move forward during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cyclones successfully saw four teams complete their seasons while preparing the other eight for 2021 competition.

Golf, women's tennis, and men's and women's cross country each had reduced practice and competition schedules but were able to field teams and stay healthy. Several athletes earned Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference honors while the men's cross country team brought home a conference championship.

"We are very pleased with our fall sports season. I think we safely were able to complete all four sports' schedules with no interruption or illnesses. The student-athletes, coaches and training staff did an excellent job following protocols and documenting daily symptoms," said Bill Finn, Athletics director. "Moving into the remaining eight sports set to compete after Jan. 1, we feel confident in our approach and the students' safety-first system."

The NJCAA determined the amount of practice and contests allowed for each sport as well as shifted some sports into the spring semester. Men's and women's basketball along with volleyball, baseball, softball and men's tennis officially begin Jan. 4. Men's and women's soccer sets off in March. As the pandemic continues, all start dates are subject to change.
